Guide to Car Hire For Florida and Off-site Disney World Holidays From The UK
For many UK families, landing at MCO, picking up a mid-size SUV, and hitting the I-4 is all part of the Florida dream trip. But in 2026, lots of UK visitors are questioning whether this is a necessary expense for their Florida trip, especially if they are staying mainly at Disney World. With new terminal logistics coming into play, and all direct flights from the UK now landing in Terminal C from April 2026, the hire car question is relevant not only for first time visitors, but people who head out more often.
While the advice to bring your photocard licence, remember to drive on the right, and prepare for an automatic car is still relevant, their are nuances for UK visitors that actually save you money and stress. From the hidden forgetting about tolls, to the specific 2026 parking charges that might make an Uber cheaper than a hire car, there is a lot of fine print when hiring a car.
What’s it like driving in Florida from the UK?
This is a question we get asked a lot, especially as we have driven in Florida on all our recent trips. The answer is that is surprisingly easy. Yes, you drive on a different side of the road and you do need to understand that there are some different rules. You can check them at:
Driving in Orlando is different, and the roads can be a bit chaotic given the number of tourists on the roads. Getting chopped up and stuck in queue at 1am on the I-4 happens. As most cars you hire are automatic, driving and parking is simple. Car park spaces are a bit bigger, but then so are the cars. Hiring a mid-size SUV is often best even if you are only a couple travelling, as a small car can feel very small on a 5 lane motorway in Florida.
Fuel costs and more when hiring a car
Fuel is usually cheaper in Florida than in the UK, which is one reason many British visitors expect driving costs to be low. But comparing prices is not always straightforward, because Florida stations display gas prices in dollars per gallon while UK forecourts show petrol prices in pence per litre. More importantly, fuel is only one part of the real cost of hiring a car in Florida. Other charges to consider when hiring a car that can add more to your holiday budget than petrol itself:
Toll charges,
insurance upsells,
deposit holds
refuelling penalties can add more to your holiday budget than petrol itself.
How do you rent a car in Florida for a Disney Holiday?
In the UK you can sometimes add car hire on to your package holiday with providers like Virgin Atlantic. This is helpful as it bundles your cost into one payment that you can usually pay off in instalments and it makes managing the booking easier.
Costco is an option we use for comparing prices for car hire for Florida in the UK. We have found that their pricing is often very competitive, so worth looking.
However, we have always booked car hire separately through a different provider before heading out to Florida, you then pick the car up at the airport. This options offers you the chance to compare what providers offer and the cost.
Do not leave booking your car hire until last minute as prices often go up.

This is an example of costings assuming 14 days spent visiting theme parks, collecting your hire car from MCO airport and using Visitor Toll Pass, and staying in a hotel that charges for car parking. Villas and certain hotels do not charge for car parking.
If you’re staying off-site but heading to Walt Disney World, you can calculate the cost of your parking based on the number of days you plan to visit using the Walt Disney World Parking Calculator.
Other options rather than a hire car include:
Florida i-trolley
Hotel and resort buses (some are free, some you pay a fee for)
Tips to save money when renting a car
There are a couple of things you can do to save money when you hire a car in Florida:
The toll inclusive packages they try to add-on. These are not needed if you use the Visitor Toll Pass and collect your car from MCO. If you are not collecting your car from MCO, then consider taking this out, although you will pay a higher rate for tolls overall.
The collect and return times you choose. Normally people will just put in an hour after they land and three hours before they take off, but this can add an extra days car hire cost to your total bill. Putting in the same time to collect and drop off, can save you £50 or more on the price of hire car.
Arrange to take the car back full, a if you let the car hire company fill the car the cost will be higher. Also fill your car before you get to MCO, as petrol is less. Filling up cheaply and then just topping it off a junction before will help you save on petrol money.
Florida Tolls: what UK visitors need to know
Florida’s motorways have tolls, and you pay them as you go through them. If you have ever driven to Disneyland Paris, the toll system is very similar. You will end up paying by card or cash, but the cash option is not always open if you are driving through in the late hours. To avoid this stress, we use the Florida Visitor Toll Pass.
Florida Visitor Toll Pass
We use the Florida Visitor Toll Pass every time we hire a car. It’s simple and easy to use, and just makes driving and exploring Florida easier, as you don’t need to worry about navigating toll stops and having change to pay. The only downside about the pass, is you have to fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO), or be willing to head there and pay tolls on the way, to get one.

Advantages of driving in Florida
When you head to Disney World from the UK, you don’t need a hire car, especially if you are choosing to stay on-site. But there are distinct advantages to having a car, no matter where you stay. This list of advantages will focus on the wider scope of having a car and staying off-site. We look at why you may want to hire a car if you stay on-site in detail in the article:
INSERT BLOCK: Hiring a car and staying onsite at Disney World: Is It Worth It?
The advantages of having a car include:
Walmart and supermarket trips without waiting. You can head out to Walmart, Publix, Target, or wherever you want at any time to pick up snacks or just have a look around
Flexibility to explore at your own pace no matter where you go. You can come and go as you please, no matter where you are exploring. Plus a hire car gives you the option of exploring more of Florida at your own pace.
Comfort, and somewhere to stash a coat, spare clothes, and even a drink in a cooler box.
Tip: If you have a car consider picking up a polystyrene cooler box from Walmart at the beginning of your trip, especially if you are visiting from April to October. Add some ice and pop in bottles of drink. This will save you money buying drinks on the way out of the parks and keep you hydrated in the heat.
Easy to get to your resorts and can save time and money in comparison to transfers from the airport.
Save time. There’s no standing waiting for Ubers and Lyfts or spending time on your phone to arrange a lift, which costs more when the parks open and close. You just get in the car and go.
Privacy and peace: if you hate noise or feeling like you need to make small talk, this option alleviates that as you can just get in the car and have your own space.
Disadvantages: insider insight
There are some big disadvantages of having a car in Florida, and it might not be what you think:
Tolls: tolls add up when you explore Florida, so this is something you need to add to the cost of your car hire when you budget. £50 is a good starting point to ring fence off in an account, but the cost will vary from person to person depending on how much exploring you do.
Theme Park car parking is high. No matter which theme park you go to there is a charge to park, and some of the theme parks like SeaWorld will only take card payments for parking.
Resort car parking can put a big dent in your spends budget if your hotel charges for car parking, and this is a cost that can be easily overlooked, especially if you book your car hire months after your hotel.
Fuel costs. Fuel costs are not as high in Florida as they are in the UK in 2026, but you will still need to put fuel in the car. Filling up a Toyota Rav 4 cost around $40 (£29.63) - $50 (£37.04) on our last trip, and remember you need to take the car back with a full tank with most car hire companies.
If you don’t plan to use your car for more than a few Walmart trips, the cost will likely not be worth it and you could end up out of pocket. Hiring a car for ease of getting from the airport is expensive, unless you are coming from Miami. Even then the Brightline now provides an easy and efficient option for UK visitors.
Car hire and staying at Universal Resorts
Universal is a spread out resort, especially since the opening of EPIC Universe, so having a car may seem like an advantage. It is for convenience, but not for cost, even if you are staying on-site. At Universal it does work out cheaper to not have a car as they charge car parking both at the hotel and at the theme parks.
Standard car parking charges per day at Universal Resort Florida
Universal Standard car parking per day: $35 (£25.93)
Universal Resort car parking per night: $26 (£19.26) plus tax at Value resorts like Endless Summer to $36 (£26.67) plus tax at Premier resorts like the Grand Helios
This is something to keep in mind if you book 14 nights from the UK here and plan to use the car. Your best option is to leave the car at the hotel and use the free Universal resort transport for Universal park days.
Hiring a car from the UK: should you?
It is a personal decision at the end of the day, but we love the flexibility of being able to explore the theme parks and what Florida has to offer. For some families, hiring a car for one of the two weeks of your trip can provide a happy in between, especially if you plan on heading further afield to the Gulf Coast or Kennedy Space Centre.
Magic In A Minute
Hiring a car is not an essential part of a Disney World and Florida holiday; it’s easy and possible to explore without a hire car. The convenience and flexibility of car hire does however give you the chance to explore more places.
