What is Florida Sales Tax?
In the UK, the price you see on the shelf is the price you pay at the till because VAT is included. In Florida, it's different. Sales tax is a consumption tax that is added at the point of sale. Because the tax rate can change depending on which county or city you are in, US retailers display the price of the item and then add the sales tax when you go to pay. This is why a $100 (£74.07) item in a Disney gift shop will actually cost you $106.50 (£78.89) or $107.50 (£79.63) at the counter depending on which Disney shop you are in.
How to Work Out Sales Tax Manually
If you don't have our calculator handy while you're shopping, you can do the math yourself.
To find the total price, including tax, you multiply the price shown by the tax rate, (expressed as a decimal), and add it to the original price.
The formula looks like this:
Total Price = Advertised Price + (Advertised Price x Sales Tax Rate)
Example:
If you buy a spirit jersey for $75 (£55.56) in a park with a 6.5% tax rate
Convert the percentage to a decimal: 0.065
Multiply: $75 x 0.065 = 4.875 (rounded to $4.88)
Add to the original:$75 + 4.88 = $79.88
Total to pay: $79.88 (£59.17)
Universal and Disney Area Tax Rates (2026)

Universal Studios, including EPIC Universe | Orange County | 6.5% |
Disney World | Orange County | 6.5% |
Disney World (All Star Resorts) | Osceola County | 7% |
International Drive | Orange County | 6.5% |
What is Taxable in Orlando? (2026)
In Florida, sales tax is applied to most items, with several exemptions. But as a general rule you pay Sales Tax on almost everything in the following categories:
Shopping & Souvenirs: Clothes, toys, electronics, Mickey ears, Loungeflys
Dining Out: Any food prepared for you (restaurants, fast food, food trucks, and even ready-to-eat deli sandwiches from a supermarket)
Tickets for attractions: This includes tickets for Disney World and Universal Studios bought in the US. This does not include the 7 or 14-Day UK Magic Ticket bought in the UK before you travel.
What is Not Taxable (Permanent Exemptions)
Florida has made several items permanently tax-free to make the state more affordable. This is a huge win for UK families who need:
Baby & Toddler Essentials: Diapers, baby wipes, strollers, cribs, and clothes/shoes for children aged 5 and under (Size 5T or smaller).
Sunscreen (UV protection) and insect repellent are now permanently tax-free in Florida.
Health & Pharmacy: Prescription meds and most over-the-counter "household remedies" (like plasters and antiseptic cream).
Groceries: Staple food items like bread, milk, fruit, and meat from a supermarket are tax free, but you will pay sales tax on soft drinks and sweets.
Disaster preparedness supplies, since 1st August 2025.
Temporary Sales Tax Exemptions
There are times when Florida has temporary Sales Tax exemptions on specific items to help Florida residents with their cost of living. If you are visiting Florida during these times, you will also benefit from the same tax exemptions.
