Did you know that you can ride around Disney World for free no matter whether you stay in a Disney hotel or you’re just visiting an attraction for the day. Exploring Disney resorts, and navigating the 40 square mile resort without the need for a hire car is easy using the free transport system

For many UK visitors, using a mass transit system means comparing it to the buses, the underground, or trains here at home, and for most people that’s not something you want to use on your holiday. However, Disney’s free transport systems will take you gliding over trees and past the Disney Fire House, offer you sneak peaks behind the scenes and into parks, and save you time and steps, by getting you closer to the magic.

In this article we’re going to go through the free options available to everyone, and how you can use this system to your advantage to get the most out the free rides while visiting Disney resorts.

Disney World Transportation Options

All Disney transport options are free to visitors at Disney World, whether you are staying in a resort or just visiting for the day. Transport options have different destinations, and every transport option does not go to every destination. The free transport options at Disney World are:

  • Buses

  • Monorail

  • Skyliner

  • Ferry boats / resort boats

Disney's transportation system is a magical experience, it can often feel like you’re having you rfirst ride before you get into a theme park. Even just hopping on a bus can feel magical; I've never been more excited to get on a bus, but more on that shortly.

If you have a hire car, check out our guide to parking at Disney World, which will cover the costs and options for on-site and off-site guests, plus you can even calculate your parking costs with our free calculator.

Disney World’s free transportation system means that no matter how you get to a theme park, you can park hop between attractions and theme parks without paying to get around.

Monorail: Disney's Classic Transportation

The monorail is one of Disney World's most iconic transport options, and yes, it’s free. A ride on the monorail offers a scenic journey giving a unique insight into EPCOT and some of the higher-end, Deluxe resorts.

It feels a bit like waiting for a train at a local station in the UK when you stand on the monorail station, but the experience is not the same at all. It’s convenient, runs regularly and consistently, and makes park hopping between EPCOT and Magic Kingdom easy.

The monorail links the Transportation and Ticket Centre (TTC) with Magic Kingdom and the Deluxe level hotels overlooking the Seven Seas Lagoon, as well as offering direct access to EPCOT.

Buses: The Way To Get Anywhere

Disney World's bus service covers the entire property, connecting every resort to every park. For UK visitors without cars, the bus network is an excellent, reliable option to move around Disney's extensive grounds. You can get to every where, including Disney Springs and the water parks. The buses also make it possible to resort hop and park hop easily.

Disney buses also have Disney themed wraps, which makes them a bit exciting: most people end up picking a favourite bus design. Mine is Ratatouille, and seeing that bus pull up to take me back to my hotel was a very exciting moment.

Disney Skyliner: Aerial Gondola System

The Skyliner is officially the most popular way to move between Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, and the four "Skyliner Resorts" (Art of Animation, Pop Century, Caribbean Beach, and Riviera).

The system is a continuous-motion gondola, meaning you don't wait for a departure, you simply walk on. It drops you at EPCOT's International Gateway, located at the back entrance which is between the UK and France pavilions and near the Boardwalk. It is a massive time-saver for those heading straight to Remy's Ratatouille Adventure.

Boats & Ferries: Relaxing Rides on the Water

Boat and ferry rides provide a peaceful, scenic alternative for traveling between Disney resorts and parks. Many visitors enjoy the leisurely pace and unique views offered by this mode of transport.

There are three key boat routes:

  • Magic Kingdom Ferry: Connects Magic Kingdom with the Transportation and Ticket Center.

  • Resort Boats: Connects resorts like Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort, and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort to Magic Kingdom.

  • Epcot and Hollywood Studios Boats: Services run between these parks and select resorts, such as Disney's BoardWalk Inn and Disney's Yacht Club Resort.

Getting to resort based dinner reservations using free transport

If you book a dinner reservation in a resort you may find yourself encountering an issue that is all too familiar. You choose to stay on Disney property and you head back to freshen up before your reservation. The problem is that you can’t get from your hotel directly to another Disney hotel. You have to go to a park, or Disney Springs to get a bus out to your resort hotel. We usually opt for the Disney Springs bus if making a choice as it tends to be quieter, but whatever comes first will do the job.

If you don’t realise this, you end up running very late, and missing your reservation time. If you book dinner at other resorts, plan your trip before and leave plenty of time to get there. (And top tip; take your resort mug so you can pick up a drink while you wait or after dinner).

Our lessons from using Disney’s free transport

After navigating Disney’s free transport system for a while, you pick up a few insights that make little differences to how you plan your day, usually to save steps. Here are some we share with friends:

This one is for resort guests only. You can see real-time bus arrivals in your My Disney Experience App for the resort you are staying at, if you have your resort reservation linked to your phone. Once you're logged in, tap "Resort Hotel" to see exactly when the next bus is hitting your stop. This is handy if you are travelling at non-peak times as you can avoid waiting out in the sun.

The Disney Skyliner and the FriendShip boats drop you at the International Gateway. This is the back entrance to EPCOT and is significantly less crowded most of the day. You walk out onto World Showcase, and you can get to Frozen Ever After and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure faster than you can from the front entrance.

The monorail is not a single track; it’s actually three separate lines. It consists of three separate lines: the Resort Monorail, the Express Monorail, and the EPCOT Monorail. If you are trying to Park Hop from Magic Kingdom to EPCOT, you must transfer at the Ticket and Transportation Center (TTC).
